How to get your learner-licence

Getting your Learner Licence is the first step to getting your driver licence in New Zealand. To get your Learner Licence, you will have to learn the New Zealand Road Code, be 16 years or older, and pass a theory test to show you understand the rules for driving safely in New Zealand.

The theory test has 35 multi-choice questions, must be completed in 30 minutes, and is taken on a computer at your local VTNZ or AA Centre. You will need to get 32 questions right to pass, so it’s important to read and understand the New Zealand Road Code, as well as practice answering test questions.

If you pass the theory test, you will be given a temporary Learner Licence so you can start practicing to drive, and your photo driver licence will be posted to you.

When you apply, you may be able to sit the test the same day or book for another time and date.

Here is what you need when you apply at your nearest Driver Licensing Agent

Complete DL1 form

Print and fill in a DL1 form at home or visit your nearest AA or VTNZ to pick up a form.

Bring proof of identity

You will need to present proof of identity and your address. Remember to bring you Learner Licence with you, this can be used as proof of identity.

Pass an eye test

Make sure you bring any glasses that you may need to wear when driving.

Have photo taken & sign

When completing your application, you will have a photo taken, and you need to provide a signature.

Pay application & test fees

Pay the test fees required for Learner Licence. As of November 2020, the Learner Licence test fee is $93.90 for Class 1 or 6.
